Traditional Dress of the Santhal Community 

The Santhal community has a distinctive and colorful traditional dress that reflects their culture, simplicity, and connection to nature. Their attire is usually made of cotton and handwoven fabrics, often decorated with bright colors and patterns.


1. Traditional Dress of Santhal Men 

a) Panchi

  • A piece of white or colored cloth worn around the waist like a dhoti.
  • It is short and lightweight, making it comfortable for daily activities and farming.

b) Jhalah

  • A small cloth worn over the shoulders.
  • Sometimes replaced with a shirt in modern times.

Colors & Designs:

  • Simple and light-colored, usually white, off-white, or with minimal embroidery.
  • During festivals, men wear red-bordered or striped versions.

Special Occasions:

  • During festivals, marriages, and dances, men wear decorated turbans or headbands with feathers or beads.

2. Traditional Dress of Santhal Women 

a) Panchi & Feta (Saree-like attire)

  • A long piece of cloth draped around the body.
  • The lower part (Panchi) is wrapped like a skirt, and the upper part (Feta) covers the chest and shoulders.

Colors & Designs:

  • Santhal women prefer bright colors like red, yellow, green, blue, and purple.
  • Bordered sarees with floral or geometric designs are popular.
  • Traditional handwoven Santhal sarees are famous for their tribal prints.

Special Occasions:

  • During festivals and dances, women wear heavily embroidered or silk sarees.

3. Accessories & Ornaments 

a) Jewelry

  • Necklaces: Made of beads, silver, or coins.
  • Earrings & Nose Rings: Worn by women, often in silver or brass.
  • Bangles & Anklets: Usually made of metal or glass.
  • Headbands: Sometimes decorated with feathers, beads, or flowers.

b) Footwear

  • Traditionally, Santhals walk barefoot, but they now wear simple sandals or handmade footwear.

Special Occasions:

  • During festivals and dances, both men and women decorate themselves with garlands and jewelry.

4. Modern Influence

  • Younger generations sometimes wear modern clothes like pants, shirts, and salwar suits, but they still prefer traditional attire during cultural events.
  • Handwoven Santhal sarees and tribal designs are now gaining popularity in fashion markets.
